To wrap up the fifth grade science unit called, Changes in Matter, students at Nassakeag Elementary School conducted an investigation to identify pancake ingredients that were missing their labels. The fifth graders made pancake batter and watched how its properties changed when it cooked. They also measured and graphed changes in weight to the pancake batter, a hot pancake, and a cooled pancake. The students were challenged to use what they learned in the unit and their data to help them explain how the weight changed after cooking the batter.

Students from Nassakeag and Setauket elementary schools have qualified to compete in the First In Math Statewide Elementary Mathematics Tournament. Congratulations to Nassakeag fourth graders Talinn Kim, Catherine Hu and Caroline Zhang, and to Setauket first graders Landon Kim, Paul Syritsyn and Liam Ward.

These students qualified for the New York State Tournament by scoring exceptionally well on the Virtual Regional Contest. The regional contest focused on the First In Math 24 Game Series which tests fact fluency, automaticity, problem-solving, procedural fluency and other math skills. Meanwhile, at the statewide tournament, students will use game cards in a group setting to demonstrate their understanding of math skills.

The statewide championship event will take place on June 1 at SUNY Albany. Only 150 students from New York qualified to attend. The district wishes its winners the best of luck as they advance to states.

Mrs. Murray’s fourth graders at Nassakeag Elementary School welcomed two parents into the classroom to learn about Ramadan and Eid Al Fitr. The parents read two books, “It’s Ramadan, Curious George,” by Hena Khan and “Ramadan – Celebrate the World,” by Hannah Eliot.

Each book explained Ramadan and Eid, and the parents spoke about why those who celebrate fast during this time. They went on to explain how the festive day of Eid is celebrated. The parents distributed lanterns, a symbol of Ramadan, and goodie bags filled with toys and candy to share the joy the holiday brings.

Nassakeag Elementary School students recently participated in the Kids Heart Challenge through their physical education classes. Students learned about the importance of heart-healthy habits including proper nutrition, hydration and sleep. In addition to in-class activities, students participated in the challenge through fundraising for the American Heart Association online. More than 125 students raised a total of $15,331.

The buildings top four fundraisers collected more than $1,000 each for the organization. Congratulations to the following:

Derek Adams – $1,304.09

Thomas Shanley – $1,231.39

Nayel Khair – $1,048.19

Nassakeag Elementary School kindergartners learned the importance of paying it forward with the help of a four-legged friend. Local author, Sarah Zagaja, visited students to share her book, “Raising Betty.” The book recounted the generosity Zagaja’s family received following the loss of their home in a fire. The outpouring of love and support from the community led to Zagaja’s family paying forward the kindness by raising a guide dog. Since Betty, Zagaja has raised several dogs for the Guide Dog Foundation and America’s Vet Dogs.

Zagaja also introduced students to her certified therapy dog Fenway, who was released from the guide dog program. Students spent time with Fenway, as well as another therapy dog, Cutch. It was clear the dogs brought joy to Nassakeag Elementary School, as students smiled ear to ear throughout the visit.
